Iraqi forces stole millions of dollars worth of property of Camp Ashraf residents

In a surprise move on the morning of May 28, 2009, the Iraqi police force attacked Ashraf at its entrance. They imposed a siege and for two months they exerted mounting pressures, threats and restrictions on Ashraf. Finally on July 28, 2009, they launched a brutal attack on Ashraf residents killing them savagely together with other suppressive forces at the behest of Khamenei who is engulfed in a nationwide uprising in Iran;

 Iranian opposition’s Camp Ashraf attacked – Statement 83

$2,537,000 worth of stolen and confiscated property from the residents of Ashraf by Iraqi forces

Damages to vehicles, roads, and public facilities of Ashraf will be subsequently calculated and announced

In the course of the criminal attack by Iraqi forces against Ashraf a total of at least $2,537,000 (2,963,000,000 Iraqi Dinars) worth of belongings were stolen, looted and confiscated from the residents of Camp Ashraf. The worth of damages to vehicles, streets, and public facilities of Ashraf has not been factored in the figure of stolen property and will be subsequently estimated and declared.

The stolen and confiscated property in the hands of the belligerent Iraqi forces, a portion of which was noted in the 56th statement of the Secretariat of the National Council of Resistance of Iran on July31, 2009, includes a variety of vehicles, logistical goods, products used for consumption and maintenance of facilities, as well as trailers, caravans, and all sorts of facilities for storage, mobile caravans, and structures the building of which were funded by Ashraf residents. This is not an exhaustive list because a portion of the camp is still occupied by the suppressive forces which makes it impossible to create a more complete list of all the stolen goods. The stolen or confiscated property by the Iraqi forces identified thus far include:

• A variety of vehicles priced at $1,177,000;
• Facilities-related items including gas-powered coolers, high-voltage cables, electrical boards, high-voltage fuses, water pumps, lift trucks, large water tankers, cameras, all amounting to more than $930,000;
• 30trailers, and caravans, and 12 confiscated storage facilities and warehouses, amounting to more than $375,000;
• Logistical and consumer products from Salam Bazaar, water purification facility, martyr’s graves, and facilities at the camp’s northern gate, amounting to more than $55,000.

The Iranian Resistance recalls the numerous statements by the international conferences of jurists regarding respect for the property of Ashraf residents, members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in Iraq, in accordance with articles52 and 53 of The Hague Conventions and Article55 of the Fourth Geneva Convention; It also emphasizes the fact that depriving Ashraf residents from the right to their property constitutes a clear violation of international law and the fundamental rights stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; and calls on the UN Secretary General, the UN Security Council, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, UNAMI, and other human rights organs to take measures to return the property of Ashraf residents to them.
