UNAMI visits Camp Ashraf, NCRI calls for protection by int. force

In a surprise move on the morning of May 28, 2009, the Iraqi police force attacked Ashraf at its entrance. They imposed a siege and for two months they exerted mounting pressures, threats and restrictions on Ashraf. Finally on July 28, 2009, they launched a brutal attack on Ashraf residents killing them savagely together with other suppressive forces at the behest of Khamenei who is engulfed in a nationwide uprising in IranIranian opposition’s Camp Ashraf attacked – Statement 77

Following UNAMI visit to Ashraf, NCRI again calls on UN, US, EU and Arab League to protect Ashraf with international force

NCRI – In response to a request by the International Committee of Jurists in Defence of Ashraf for US forces to take over protection of Camp Ashraf and the Committee’s criticism of their inaction in response to the recent attack by Iraqi forces on the residents of Ashraf, the US Defense Department press secretary Geoff Morrell on Monday said that the US Defense Department has no authority to assume control of Camp Ashraf under the bilateral security agreement that Washington reached with Baghdad. “However, we continue to remind the government of Iraq of their international obligation to treat those still residing in the camp as humanely as possible,” he added.

The Washington Times on August 10 said that a special report will be "published this month by the U.S. government's prestigious National Defense University". The report says, "the Iraqi army and police are becoming pawns of sectarian political parties — a trend that it calls 'a recipe for civil war'. … The 5th IA division in Diyala is heavily influenced by the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq,' a Shi'ite political party with some ties to Iran". This is the division that was responsible for the bloody protection on the residents of Ashraf.

The Iranian Resistance on August 6, 2009 had its 72nd statement on the Camp Ashraf attack said: "Thus, the problem of Ashraf residents is neither to do with Iraqi sovereignty, nor the presence of police and establishing a police station and commanding it on the entrance of Ashraf (specifically in the building dedicated to the late Lord Slynn of Hadley.) The issue is about misusing "sovereignty," and the "police station" to implement the "mutual agreement" of Khamenei and Al-Maliki to suppress, murder the Iranian opposition, or force them to succumb to the clerical regime. Against this background, this crime against humanity tramples upon international law, conventions and resolutions and rejects the "responsibility to protect" (RtoP). … The experience of the past year has proven that the current Iraqi government does not have the capacity and qualification to be responsible for the protection of Ashraf residents.  In reality, unfortunately, the Iraqi government implements the wishes of the dictatorship ruling Iran to suppress the Iranian opposition in Iraq according to the "mutual agreement." As Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, wrote to the US President on August 2, the solution is the following:  The US forces be in charge of protecting Ashraf temporarily until an international force under the supervision of the UN replaces them. The Iranian Resistance calls the UN, the US Government, the European Union and the Arab League to this effect”.

As Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, wrote in her letter to the President of the United States on August 2, the solution now is that: “The U.S. forces to temporarily undertake the protection of the Camp Ashraf until an international force under United Nations monitoring takes their place.” The Iranian Resistance draws the attention of the United Nations, the Government of the United States, the European Union and the Arab league to this demand.

Following remarks by the press secretary of the U.S. Defense Department and yesterday’s visit to Ashraf by a fact finding delegation from the UNAMI and on the brink of the release of a special report and research by the U.S. National Defense University on the Iraqi forces responsible for protection of Ashraf, which is “extremely under the influence” of Iranian regime’s proxies in Iraq, Mrs. Rajavi once again called on the United Nations, United States of America, the European Union and the Arab League to initiate an international force to protect Ashraf. She added that hoisting the flag of the United Nations in Ashraf is the only recognized international scheme to protect its residents under the international law, conventions and obligations.

The President-elect of the Iranian Resistance recalled the agreement between the U.S. forces and every single resident of Ashraf, which was reached following the hand over of all their weapons to the U.S. force in return for their protection until final determination and called on President Obama to order the U.S. forces on the scene to take the control of the situation in Ashraf and prevent further violence, bloodshed and murder by the Iraqi forces which is carried out at the behest and order of Ali Khamenei, the religious dictator of Iran.
