Maryam Rajavi: Words are not enough; G8 must impose comprehensive sanctions against Iranian regime

Maryam Rajavi, the leader of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, delivers a speech at a rally in Villepinte, a northern suburb of Paris, Saturday, June 20, 2009. Rajavi, spoke Saturday to huge cheers, hailing the importance of resisting Iran's leadership. Mrs. Maryam Rajavi: "Words are not enough; G8 must impose comprehensive sanctions against the Iranian regime, refer its dossier of crimes to the UN Security Council and support free UN-supervised elections in Iran"

NCRI – The President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, has welcomed the declaration of the G8 foreign ministers, in which they condemned “violence which has led to the loss of Iranian citizens’ lives,” and urges the Iranian regime to “immediately halt” the violence, while expressing “solidarity with the victims.” But, she said, regrettably, this reaction is not proportional to the clerical regime’s brutal suppression of the uprising of millions of Iranians across the country. Making statements does not suffice and time for action has arrived. The era of appeasement, negotiations and concessions vis-à-vis the Iranian regime has passed.

Making statements does not suffice and time for action has arrived. The era of appeasement, negotiations and concessions vis-à-vis the Iranian regime has passed.

Mrs. Rajavi stressed that the current trend is irreversible, and the youth and women who have taken to the streets will not cease their struggle until they achieve freedom. She urged G8 leaders to enact the following measures immediately:

• Suspend all diplomatic relations with the Iranian regime and impose comprehensive sanctions related to trade, armaments, and technology against it;
• Support the annulment of the regime’s sham election and force it to bow to free elections under the supervision of the United Nations;
• Refer the dossier of the regime’s crimes, especially as it regards to its human rights abuses and terrorism to the UN Security Council, and set up an international court to put the regime’s leaders on trial, in particular Khamenei and Ahmadinejad, in the presence of representatives from the Iranian people and the Iranian Resistance.

In reference to a point in the G8 foreign ministers’ declaration that expressed the desire to resolve the current situation through “democratic dialogue and peaceful means,” the Iranian Resistance’s President-elect said that this has been the ultimate desire of the Iranian people and Resistance throughout the last three decades. However, the clerical regime’s existence is intertwined with violence, crime, warmongering and terrorism. The only way to hold a democratic dialogue and garner peaceful methods is the realization of democratic change in Iran and free elections under UN supervision. However, regrettably, the international community’s policies, including that of the G8, have helped the survival of the religious fascism ruling Iran, while obstructing change at the same time.
