Iran: Widespread suppression of youth under pretext of combating "thugs and hooligans"NCRI – “On Monday morning, the State Security Forces’(SSF) SWAT teams started their special operations in throughout Tehran for arresting more than 50 thugs and hooligans,” the state-run Fars news agency reported on Monday.

Fars quoted Colonel Mehdi Ahmadi, an official of Tehran’s SSF saying that the implementation of the new round started with arrest of three persons and it will continue.”  “The arrests will be continued until all thugs and hooligans are arrested,” he said.

Another group was arrested in Kakh Sefid district area of Tehran, the agency reported on Monday.  The district is well known because of the unrest and clashes of its angry residents with SSF.

The reports of arrests of young people in groups in various Tehran districts continued in state media. The latest report said “a group of five were arrested in Salsebil district.” “Average age of those arrested was 25 years old.” Those arrested “planned to join the thugs and hooligans.”

Suppressive measures under the pretext of cracking down "thugs and hooligans" first was introduced in April 2007, as a part of the so-called "boosting public security plan."

Since its implementation mass street arrests of hundreds of thousands of women and youth under the pretext of "mal-veiling" and cracking down on "thugs and hooligans" followed.

The main aim of the plan is to combat popular protests due to widespread opposition to mullahs’ regime especially among the women and youth.
