More than 100 Iraqi tribe leaders call for protection of Ashraf residents

More than 100 Iraqi tribe leaders call for protection of Ashraf residents NCRI – In separate letters addressed to the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and General Raymond Odierno, commander of Multi-National Forces-Iraq (MNF-I), more than 100 tribal leaders and civil society organizations in various governorates across Iraq condemned restrictions imposed on Ashraf residents and called for U.S. forces' protection of the Camp.

They said that since the transfer of protection from the U.S. force to Iraqis, the Ashraf residents have faced growing restrictions and harassments.

The tribe leaders therefore call for adoption of necessary measures to prevent the meddling of the Iranian regime in Iraq and to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe from taking place in Ashraf.

The tribal leaders and prominent figures in Iraq said that continued actions of the Iraqi forces against the Ashraf resident, on the order of the Mouwaffaq al-Rubaie, the country's National Security Advisor,  is a blatant violation of the Arabic and Islamic principles, the Geneva Conventions, international law and international humanitarian law.  Thus, they deemed it as essential that the task of protecting Camp Ashraf returned to the U.S. forces.
