Associated Press, LONDON – The People’s Mojahedin of Iran protested at a conference Tuesday its classification as a terrorist group under the EU’s blacklist and the British Terrorism Act of 2000.
At least 30 British legislators and experts in international law spoke in favor of the organization at the conference, according to Dowlat Nowrouzi, the United Kingdom representative of the National Council of Resistance of Iran. The People’s Mojahedin is a member of the council.
Britain’s Foreign Office says the group was proscribed as a terrorist organization because it has been responsible for several acts of terrorism in Iran and has ties with Saddam Hussein.
Supporters such as Lord Corbett of Castle Vale in Britain deny these allegations and say the Mojahedin is a democratic organization seeking freedom for the Iranian people.
