AFP- December 22- The United States has received assurances from Baghdad that an Iranian rebel group will not be expelled from Iraq amid fears of persecution at the hands of Tehran authorities, the White House said on Monday.

Asked about the fate of the main armed Iranian opposition group based in Iraq, the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran (PMOI), White House spokesman Benjamin Chang told AFP: "What the government has said is that no one will be forcibly transferred to a country where they fear persecution on account of political or religious beliefs or (where) they might face torture."

The group, which is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, has been holding demonstrations outside UN offices in Geneva protesting against their possible expulsion from Iraq.
