Iran: EU wants to protect Iranians

council_europe_strasburgReuters- Strasburg- Seventy members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe called Friday on the United States not to transfer to Iraq control of the Ashraf refugee camp. Located 70 km north of Baghdad, it houses 3,500 Iranian refugees, mostly members of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

In a written statement, the signatories from different countries and political groups think the opponents of the government which is in power in Tehran "may tortured and execute if they are forced to leave the country as the Iraqi government has expressed interest that they do so."

In a context of gradual withdrawal of the U.S. military, the Iraqi government has expressed its intention to regain sovereignty over the Camp Ashraf.

The People's Mojahedin fears that the Iraqi government, led by a Shiite majority, turned them over to Tehran.
