Iran: Mayhem in the Gohardasht prison

NCRI – Over past 24 hours the political prisoners resisted their two fellow inmates’ transfer to ward six of the notorious Gohardasht prison in western Tehran suburbs.

The prisoners barricaded the door to ward two preventing the guards from entering the compound chanting anti-government slogans. The political inmates demanded the prison warden to answer their request for better living conditions in the prison. However, more than 50 guards with agents of Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) raided the section and beat up the prisoners causing severe injuries. They took away three inmates Messrs Farhad Vakili, Farzad Kamangar and Ali Heidari. All three are still awaiting a trial after 16 months of incarceration.

Deputy prison warden Pirayesh personally took part in punishing the prisoners and then transferred them to the most dreaded sections of 13, 14, and 15 of the prison building.

Another prisoner, Babak Dadbakhash, sewed his lips together as part of a hunger strike in protest to his conditions.

Gohardasht is the most dreadful prison in which political prisoners are severely tortured. Often political prisoners are thrown in the cell with common criminals to make serving time for them even more difficult. There have been reports that political prisoners had been beaten and murdered by their inmates instigated by prison wardens.
