Iran : Families of detained students stage protest outside Tehran prison

Students Protest - Teharn -Dec 9, 2007NCRI – The families of detained students gathered across from the notorious Evin prison in Tehran today called for the unconditional release of their loved ones. This was part of their continuing protest against detention of their children.

The students had been arrested by the mullahs’ regime during protests during a week of action by students in early December. The students’ week was called by the main Iranian opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

In the week of action, students staged gatherings in various Iranian cities including Mashhad, Kerman, Mazandaran, Shiraz, Tabriz, Najaf-Abad, Hamedan, Kermanshah, Orumieh and Khorramshahr in which a number of students were arrested by the mullahs’ regime.

Students chanted anti-government slogans such as: "Death to dictator," "Free all political prisoners," "University students are wide awake," "Students die but will not be humiliated," "Mr. President the student movement will go on until the end."

The imprisoned students have been denied the most basic rights. The treatment of students by the mullahs’ regime has faced global protest. Amnesty International has officially protested the arrests. The President of the European Parliament has called for the immediate release of detained students.

The families asserted that all their efforts had not yet produced any results and the regime’s officials at Evin Prison had not responded to their demands. The families are not allowed to talk to their children in prison.
