Iran’s youngsters-Protests and Demonstrations

THE GLOBALIST QUIZ – Boston Globe
Iran finds itself at the center of the global debate over nuclear proliferation. But that issue does not matter to many of Iran’s young people, most of whom were born after the 1979 revolution. They care more about jobs and greater social freedom. What percentage of Iran’s population is under the age of 30?

Answers:

A. 30 percent B. 40 percent C. 60 percent D. 70 percent

C. 60 percent is correct.

As of 2006, close to 60 percent of Iran’s population is under the age of 30, compared with about 30 percent in Italy, 40 percent in the United States, and 70 percent in Nigeria.

As recently as 2000, the Iran figure stood closer to 70 percent. That was due to the large numbers of births that occurred after the country’s 1979 revolution and the Iran-Iraq war, which lasted from 1980 to 1988. Youth unemployment in Iran is about 30 percent. This figure is expected to increase as more Iranians reach working age.
