Iraq suicide bombs show apparent Iran tie

UPI – Stepped-up efforts to bring down deadly Iraq suicide car bombers have allegedly revealed a link to Iran, a U.S. military official said.
U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Michael Barbero, in a Pentagon briefing, said tracing the source of the bombs has led, at least in part, to Iran intelligence services.

He said Iranian assistance of Sunni groups, as well as Shiite extremists, shows an apparent sharing of Sunni insurgents’ goals of destabilizing Iraq and tying down U.S. forces, Voice of America reported.

Barbero said detainees in U.S. custody told of Iranian support while munitions manufactured in Iran have been found in Baghdad neighborhoods.

He said the U.S. military has been focusing on networks that send out huge bombs in cars and trucks, as was the case this week when attacks killed a reported 150 Iraqi civilians.
