Iranian justice minister dies in car crash

Agence France Presse – Iranian Justice Minister Jamal Karimi-Rad was killed when bhis car collided with a truck on Iran’s notorious roads Thursday, the semi-official Mehr agency reported.

Two unnamed family members were also injured in the crash on the road between Saveh and Tafresh in the centre of the country and have been transferred to a hospital in the religious city of Qom.

No other details about the crash were immediately available.

Ayatollah Mahmud Hashemi Sharhudi is in charge of Iran’s judiciary while Karimi-Rad served as justice spokesman and had little real power.

Roads around Saveh are notoriously hazardous because they are so narrow.

Iranian roads are among the most dangerous in the world with at least 100,000 people — in a country of 69 million — killed in accidents over the past five years.

Police say road accidents are expected to claim 31,000 lives in the current Iranian year which ends next March 21.
