Iran Uprising at a Glance – Day 28

Based partially on reporting by PMOI (MEK) Network in Iran

Thursday, October 13, 2022 – 10 PM CET

The Count:

  • Days: 28th day
  • Protests: 185 cities
  • Fatalities: 400+ estimated deaths, 206 identified by MEK
  • Detentions: 20,000+

Protests in Tehran, Karaj, Ahvaz in the south, Abhar, Arak, and many cities in Kurdistan province such as Sanandaj, Mahabad, Baneh, and Marivan are going on tonight. In Tehran chants of “Death to the dictator” and “Death to Khamenei” are ringing out in various neighborhoods as has become customary. The Internet blackout has continued.

A notable feature of the uprising has been that funerals and memorials for each of the protesters that have been killed by the regime have turned into another protest. The funeral of Mohsen Mousavi in Deram township in Zanjan province is one such case. Mohsen Mousavi was a 32-year-old shop owner who was standing in front of his shop in Tehran’s bazaar when he was hit in the head by security forces and then shot with a pellet gun and died from his injuries. His family laid him to rest today in a large gathering with great grief for a life cut short by the brutality of the regime.

UPDATE: 2:00 PM CEST

Based partially on reporting by PMOI (MEK) Social Headquarters in Iran

Thurs, October 13, 2022 – 2 PM CET

As the fourth week of Iran’s historic uprising for freedom and the downfall of Ali Khamenei’s theocratic dictatorship comes to a close, there is no end to the protests in sight. Khamenei spoke yesterday and was in total denial, calling the protests “scattered riots here and there.” He insisted, not unlike other dictators that fell before him, that “recent developments are not spontaneous” and blamed “the enemies’ propaganda” as driving the protests. Meanwhile, protesters less than a mile from his office chanted “Death to Khamenei”.  The ailing and ruthless dictator for life signaled, not unexpectedly, that he does not listen and will not correct his behavior. The only avenue that he left open for change is the toppling of the entirety of his regime by the Iranian people who have shown they want fundamental change.

Strikes in the oil and gas sector continued with workers demanding the release of detained protesters and political prisoners. A general strike in the Kurdistan province and parts of Tehran has spread to Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city, as well.

Protesters are gearing up to hit the streets again in what has now become a test of will with suppressive forces that have grown weary.

An Internet blackout in Iran is ongoing. We will be providing news updates as we receive them throughout the day.
