The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) announced on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, that the Coronavirus fatalities in 547 cities had exceeded 355,600. The number of victims in Tehran has reached 83,446, Isfahan 23,980, Khuzestan 22,456, Khorasan Razavi 21,785, Mazandaran 13,780, Lorestan 13,170, West Azerbaijan 12,808, Fars 12,312, Gilan 11,555, Sistan and Baluchestan 10,445, Alborz 10,413, Kerman 8,913, Golestan 8,400, Kermanshah 6,533, Yazd 6,218, Hormozgan 6,140, North Khorasan 4,864, Ardabil 4,315, Bushehr 4,109, Qazvin 4,009, Ilam 3,623, South Khorasan 3,301, and Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari 2,870.

Iran: Protest Rallies in Cities Against Repression, Corruption, and Economic Woes

On Tuesday, the people of Jughan, a Charmahal & Bakthiary province, held a rally in protest to the arrest of Habib Fadayee, one of the citizens of the county. Fadayee was beaten and arrested earlier today by security forces. The protesters blocked roads and chanted, “Our imprisoned brother must be freed.”

Locals in a city in southwestern Iran took to the streets and gathered outside the police station after security forces arrested an outspoken community leader and activist. Habib Fadaie was detained this morning after armed security forces raided his home and beat his son in Joneghan. He was taken to an unknown location. In a video, his distressed son was seen inviting locals to gather on the streets to demand the release of his father.

Over 40 Injured, 50 Interrogated in NW Iran Protests

Following protests held on August 7 where military forces opened fire in a protest gathering in Naqadeh, in northwestern Iran, there were reports of over 40 injured, and over 50 were summoned and interrogated. According to the Hengaw Organization website, protest gatherings continued for three days and anti-riot police reinforcements were sent from Urmia and Miandoab to control the protests. Protests started after locals had gathered outside the Police Station Number 11 building to demand justice after “thugs” killed a 31-year-old man identified as Fardin Ebrahimi. Fardin was the father of a three-year-old girl and was a political activist.

Iran’s Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentence, Ruling Called “Unfair”

Iran’s Supreme Court upheld the death sentence for Yousef Mehrad, allegedly for insulting the Prophet of Islam. The Revolutionary Court of Arak also upheld 8 years for Mr. Mehrad for another part of his case. Mohammad Arman, Mr. Mehrad’s lawyer said the ruling was unfair and the Iranian Judiciary needed to exonerate his client. Arman, the Judiciary-appointed lawyer for Mr. Mehrad, said his client had not confessed to any of the charges leveled against him. Nevertheless, the Supreme Court upheld the preliminary court’s ruling that relied on implied conclusions unsubstantiated legally or religiously.

Iran’s Executions Surging With Ebrahim Raisi’s Taking Office

Iran has stepped up executions of prisoners including those convicted of drug-related charges after Raisi’s presidential inauguration. At least 22 prisoners have been executed in August, bringing the total number of those executed in 2021 to at least 210. Seven of those executed in August were charged with murder while the other 15 were executed on drug charges.

The latest news from Iran says prison authorities have ramped up pressure on Maryam Akbari Monfared, a political prisoner for 12 years without a single day of leave. Prison authorities have deprived Mrs. Akbari of visitation by her three daughters, claiming they want to prevent the Coronavirus from spreading. Nevertheless, they allow new arrivals into the prison wards without keeping them for the necessary time in the quarantine.
