The Growing Wave of Protests in Iran

Barely a week after the regime’s sham presidential election, the people of Iran have already shown how much they trust the incoming cabinet of Ebrahim Raisi to solve their problems. Many protesting groups like workers, teachers, and farmers that held rallies in dozens of cities across Iran on Sunday, continued their demonstrations on Monday and put on display that this movement is not going to stop anytime soon.

Iran: COVID-19 Fatalities Surpasses 318,500

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) announced on Sunday, June 27, 2021, that the Coronavirus fatalities in 547 cities had exceeded 318,500. The number of victims in Tehran has reached 74,626, Isfahan 21,490, Khuzestan 20,146, Khorasan Razavi 19,375, East Azerbaijan 12,993, Lorestan 12,540, Fars 10,682, Gilan 10,581, Alborz 9,073, Sistan and Baluchestan 7,601, Kerman 7,253, Hamedan 6,868, Hormozgan 4,620, Bushehr 3,414, and Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari 2,615.

The second week of protests and strikes by oil-sector workers in Iran

A widespread strike by Iranian oil and petrochemical workers has entered its second week. The workers, who started their strike on June 19, the morrow of the regime’s sham presidential elections, are demanding better wages and working conditions. The workers are facing increasing pressure as a result of a declining economy caused by government corruption and the regime’s poor response to the Covid-19 outbreak, which has caused mass unemployment.

Iran: Protests by retirees, dairy farmers in several cities

On Sunday, retirees and pensioners held protest rallies in several cities across Iran, including Tehran and Ahvaz. In Tehran, the rally was held in front of the offices of the Social Security Organization. After a short hiatus during the sham presidential election, the pensioners are back in the streets to claim their demands.

In the past months, retirees have been regularly organizing protests in various cities. But regime officials refuse to answer the pensioners’ demands. The protesters complain that their meager pensions are not nearly enough to cover their most basic expenses and are often delayed for several months. Sunday protests by pensioners have become a regular scene across Iran as the living conditions of this deprived segment of the society continue to become worse.
