Heavy Rainfall, Floods, and Drought in Iran, Product of the Mullahs’ Regime

Following heavy rainfall in recent days, floods have ravaged 47 cities in 8 Iranian provinces, killing at least ten people and destroying. Floods in recent years have taken the lives of many Iranians and destroyed their lives. These floods are happening while, according to regime officials, Iran is suffering from drought.

The regime’s president Hassan Rouhani recently admitted that “we are facing drought this year.” Other officials constantly report declining water supplies and declining water levels in dam lakes, and severe summer droughts and power outages.

Why would Iranians have to suffer from both drought and devastating floods?

Like Iran’s economy, the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) dominates Iran’s natural resources and wastes them for more profit. For instance, the IRGC has dug deep wells, destroying groundwater aquifers in Iran. On Tuesday, the state-run Hamshahri admitted that the regime had drained 74,000 cubic kilometers of groundwater, which has “Increased soil salinity and abundance in land subsidence” and has led to the loss of soil fertility and the death of vast plains prone to agriculture.

This situation has made the land between the world’s largest lake and the bay connected to the high seas, a land with two huge mountain ranges and thousands of rivers and streams, facing the most critical drought.

As for the floods, it is caused by the flooding of rivers following seasonal rains. The regime’s authorities have acknowledged they have no plan for addressing this issue. Last year, when similar floods hit many Iranian cities, the regime’s deputy governor in Kerman admitted that the lack of dredging of rivers had caused floods.

Environmental protection requires a detailed policy and appropriate spending. Iran has the best opportunities and resources for environmental protection. But the mullahs’ regime continues devastating Iran’s environment, plunders its natural resources, and refuses to address environmental crises.

The Iranian regime’s destructive policies have devastated all aspects of the Iranian environment, including forests, rivers, wetlands, mountains, and even the air. The result of this destruction is rampant poverty and misery, and people’s suffering.

Iran's Zagros forests' wildfires and the authorities response

Keeping the environment safe and protecting natural resources are the measures taken by a democratic government, not the vicious mullahs’ regime that waste Iranian people’s resources for terrorism and plunder.

The regime has arrested many environmental activists in recent years and sentenced them to lengthy prison terms. There have been several protests against the regime’s devastating environmental policies in recent years in Iran.

On April 28, the State Security Force tried to cut down the walnut trees in the village of Kahman Aleshtar in Lorestan Province, a source of income for the people of the region. For years, the locals had endured great hardships to grow trees. The villagers tried to prevent the SSF from doing that. A Special Forces unit fired tear gas at protesters and opened fire on them.

Soon outraged people clashed with the security forces and resisted the regime’s oppressive measures.

The events in Alashtar confirmed two facts: The regime is devastating Iran’s environment and people’s lives in all aspects. Secondly, the only option for Iranians to prevent the regime from further annihilating Iran and its resources is to resist and overthrow the regime.
