Iranian man sentenced to amputation as “retaliation” in southwestern province

A man was sentenced to amputation, in addition to other charges, in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, in southwestern Iran yesterday.

According to the IRGC-affiliated YJC website, the man was detained for injuring a state environmental agent. He was sentenced to qisas, the Islamic term for “retaliation”, a financial penalty, prison, and confiscation of weapons.

The report did not mention which part of his body would be amputated.

Two female activists in Iran receive 10 years for their activities

Two female activists in Tehran and Sanandaj received a total of 10 years’ imprisonment for their activities promoting human rights in Iran.

The two female activists charged for exercising their fundamental right to freedom of expression are Faranak Jamshidi and Soha Mortezaii.

Conservationist Faranak Jamshidi was sentenced to 4 years in prison on the charge of “membership” in a Kurdish opposition group.

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) announced on Monday, February 8, 2021, that the Coronavirus death toll in 480 cities across Iran had exceeded 212,900. The number of victims in Tehran is 51,211, Khorasan Razavi 14,300, Isfahan 13,605, Khuzestan 10,620, Mazandaran 8,872, West Azerbaijan 7,848, Gilan 7,586, Golestan 5,519, Alborz 5,408, Kermanshah 4,364, Central Province 4,293, Kurdistan 3,672, Semnan 3,185, Hormozgan 2,260, and Bushehr 2,139.

Intelligence Minister says Iran can make nukes despite Khamenei’s fatwa

Iran’s Minister of Intelligence told state-run TV on Monday night that the regime could move towards nuclear weapons despite a fatwa by the country’s Supreme Leader forbidding nukes.

“The Supreme Leader has issued a fatwa which stipulates that nuclear weapons are haram (forbidden) but a cornered cat behaves differently from a free cat. If Iran is pushed in that direction, it is no longer Iran’s fault,” Mahmoud Alavi warned.

Alavi is citing a fatwa issued by Khamenei in the 2000s that bans the development of nuclear weapons.

Iran sentences 8 Bahais to 14 years of prison in southern city

The 2nd Branch Appeals Court of Hormozgan Province, in southern Iran sentenced eight Bahai men and women to a total of 14 years of prison for following the banned religion.

According to the Human Rights News Agency, the eight men and women were identified as Arash Rasekhi, Nasim Qanavatian, Maral Rasti, Mahnaz Jan Nesar, Omid Afaghi, Mehroallah Afshar, Adeeb Hagh Pejve and Farhad Amri.

The eight Bahais were previously tried in the 2nd Branch of the Bandar Abbas Court on December 24, 2020. They were each sentenced to two years of prison, except for Farhad and Adeeb, who were sentenced to one year of prison.

The widespread participation of Iranian women in recent uprisings is reminiscent of their role during the 1979 revolution against the monarchic dictatorship in Iran. The current uprising and the leading role of women in it, is a continuation of their participation in 1979 Revolution and in fact prior to that.
