NCRI – Tennessee senator Bob Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said to reporters earlier this week that lawmakers will probably be considering an Iran sanctions bill in the very near future.
However, he advised that the same will not be done for a Russia sanctions bill.
Corker said: “We’re not going to do a Russian sanctions bill during this work period. We’re going to do an Iran sanctions bill to deal with the other activities they’ve been involved in in the region.”
He said earlier last month that the bill had been delayed for a number of reasons, one being the upcoming presidential elections that will take place in Iran later this month.
The legislation which deals with sanctioning Iranian regime for its ongoing violations of human rights and for carrying out ballistic missile testing also faces delays because of opposition from the Democrats. Nevertheless, there are some Democrats who have called for the legislation to be put into place quickly.
Later this month the Iranian elections are due to take place, but these are not democratic elections like we know in the West. The candidates are vetted so that only those who will continue with the policies of the Supreme Leader have a chance.
The two leading candidates are the current president, Hassan Rouhani, and Ebrahim Raisi, a member of the so-called death committee that was responsible for the death of tens of thousands of political prisoners in what has been named the 1988 massacre.
It is certain that whatever the outcome of these elections, nothing will change in Iran. The Iranian people will still be repressed and the President will still continue to allow executions and human rights abuses. Under the next President Iran will still be known as the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world. Nothing will change until the international community leaves it with no choice but to change.
