Speech by Jean Ziegler in webinar on the 1988 massacre in Iran

Jean Ziegler, member of the Advisory Committee of the UN Human Rights Council, on August 22, 2020 addressed a webinar on the 1988 massacre in Iran.
Survivors of Iran’s 1988 massacre of political prisoners, international legal experts, and human rights and political dignitaries held a webinar on August 22, 2020 appealing to the United Nations and its Member States to carry out an independent investigation into the massacre.
Following a fatwa handed down by the Iranian regime’s Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini in mid-July 1988, ‘Death Commissions’ were set up in prisons across Iran that sent thousands of political prisoners to their deaths.
More than 30,000 political prisoners, mostly affiliated with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK), were secretly mass executed over several months after mock trials lasting just five minutes. Their corpses were doused with disinfectant, packed in refrigerated trucks, and buried at night in mass graves across the country.

Iran’s Regime Disinformation Campaign Against the MEK

Iran’s Regime Disinformation Campaign Against the MEK
Creating and disseminating fake news against the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK/PMOI) is one of the well-known methods of the mullah regime against the main opposition force and its democratic alternative.

In the one-year period between the summer of 2015 and the summer of 2016, Iranian state media produced more than 300 movies and television series to demonize the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI-MEK). Throughout 2016, the Iranian regime also published 14 different books condemning and defaming the MEK. To this day, Tehran publishes a monthly magazine and maintains at least 13 websites dedicated to the topic, to say nothing of the countless sock puppet accounts on social media that have contributed to the disinformation campaign in recent years.

To Stop Executions in Iran Permanently, World Should Hold Mullahs to Account for 1988 Massacre

The Iranian regime executed a woman and three men on August 18. Previously, on August 5, Mostafa Salehy, who was detained in the 2018 major Iran protests was executed.
The mullahs’ incessant executions and human rights violations will continue as long as they enjoy impunity over 1988 massacre of political prisoners.
Executions in Iran are a political tool for the mullahs to maintain their grasp on power.
The regime’s founder, Ruhollah Khomeini, ordered the massacre of all political prisoners, mostly members and supporters of PMOI/ MEK, who refused to succumb to the regime’s demands.
30,000 innocent prisoners were executed only for preserving their ideas. Since the 1988 massacre, the regime has never stopped its human rights violations.
killing over 1500 protesters during the major Iran protests in November 2019, indicate how the mullahs use execution and repression to prolong their rule.
These events also confirm how the mullahs enjoy and use their impunity over the 1988 massacre as a license to kill and further brutalize the Iranian society. many of the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre – such as Ebrahim Raisi, current head of the regime’s Judiciary – hold top positions in the regime.
Now, to end the regime’s ongoing human rights violations, the world community should hold the mullahs to account for the 1988 massacre and end their impunity.
This will also help the Iranian people in their quest for freedom and democracy.
The world community has an opportunity to stand with the people of Iran.
The United Nations and its members should take action regarding the 1988 massacre during the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.
