The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/ MEK) announced on August 7, 2020, that the Coronavirus death toll in 369 cities across Iran had passed 84,400. The number of victims in Khorasan Razavi is 6,238, Khuzestan 5,882, Mazandaran 3,944, Gilan 3,527, Lorestan 3,440, Sistan and Baluchestan 2,646, Alborz 2,555, Fars 2,345, Golestan 2,300, Hamedan 2,199, Kermanshah 2,050, North Khorasan 1,237, Hormozgan 1,055, Central 998, Ardabil 985, Bushehr 985, Yazd 965, and Zanjan 790.
As the crisis continues in most parts of the country, the issue of paying for the treatment of Coronavirus patients, who are mostly from low-income groups, has become a significant problem. A state-run media outlet, Khabar-e Fori, noting that the cost of treating a Coronavirus patient is up to 5 million Tomans, according to the Health Ministry, wrote yesterday, “A large portion of the lower-income sectors, neither have a permanent job, nor do they have insurance. Now it’s time to ask, that with the spread of the Coronavirus, what should we expect to see in the foreseeable future, given the lost jobs, and the cut in the income of lower-income families? What should patients who cannot afford the treatment costs or the impoverished families that have become poorer as a result of the treatment costs do now?”
