Within the last two weeks, the Iranian regime has mounted oppressive measures. The mullahs’ Judiciary has upheld several death sentences for those arrested during the nationwide Iran protests in November 2019. But this increasing oppression confirms the Iranian society’s restiveness and that the regime has lost its control. Nevertheless, it does not undermine the necessity of the international community taking action to prevent bloodshed in Iran.
Last week, the regime’s High Court of Appeal upheld the death sentences previously issued for three young men, arrested during the nationwide Iran protests. Political prisoners Amir Hossein Moradi, 26, Saeed Tamjidi, 28, and Mohammad Rajabi, 26, were arrested for participating in the November uprising and sentenced to death after being tortured for a long time.

The economic crisis, poverty, high inflation rate, the regime’s institutionalized corruption and oppression, along with the COVID-19 crisis and the mullahs’ mismanagement of it have turned the Iranian society into a powder keg. Now senior regime officials acknowledge this reality that the Iranian society needs only a spark to explode.
The state-run Mostaghel daily wrote on June 29: “We will end this year with unbearable housing rents, shared houses, grave dwelling, living in tents and on rooftops. Soon massive crowd of poor people, who cannot afford the basics face those ‘four percent’ elites [regime’s officials and their affiliates]. Certainly, those who have nothing to lose will not lose this struggle.”
Another state-run daily, Aftab, warned on June 29: “When people have nothing to lose, they will easily give up their lives to achieve their goal. Before the situation worsens, [officials] should help these people.”
Mullah Hashem Hashem-Zadeh Harrisi, a member of the regime’s Assembly of Experts, in this regard said: “The current state of society is practically unbearable. People are moving away from the system every day. Today the situation is very sensitive. We cannot sit and watch the system collapse”.
Engulfed with international crises and facing an explosive society, the Iranian regime desperately tries to postpone its inevitable downfall. In addition, the recent remarks by the regime’s officials in this regard shows their utmost fear of a possible uprising and the leading role of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and its Resistance Units.
Mohammad Reza Habibi, head of the regime’s Justice Department in Isfahan, expressed his fear of another uprising. He said: “Let the MEK agents know that if anything goes wrong, like what happened in 2009, December 2017-January 2018, and November last year, we will respond decisively. The verdict of’ corruption on earth’ has been approved for eight cases related to the mentioned incidents.”
Meanwhile the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) has started a new wave of arrest of the MEK supporters and family members as well as youth. The MOIS has also summoned and threatened a large number of people because of their political background. In addition, the intelligence and security forces have contacted many young people in various cities, warning them against contacting the MEK and threatening them with the consequences for such contacts.
Ardeshir Motahari, one of the regime’s Members of Parliament, on Jun 22 said: “How could we resolve crises in a night? We are not joking about the [regime’s] security.”
Ebrahim Raisi, the regime’s Judiciary Chief, on June 21 said: “We have no limits in terms of dealing with security issues. The security of system, people, cities and society is an important issue for us.”
The Iranian Resistance has called for immediate action by the United Nations Secretary-General, the UN Human Rights Council, and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as relevant rapporteurs and other human rights organizations, to save the lives of political prisoners in Iran.
Nevertheless, these oppressive measures confirm the regime’s utter fear of the Iranian people’s uprising. At a time when the mullahs are experiencing international isolation and grappling with the coronavirus crisis and economic problems, an explosion of the restive Iranian society would result in the regime’s immediate downfall.
