Report from Iranian prison indicate that Ali Younesi, elite student of Sharif University of Technology who has been arrested 2 months ago along with his fellow classmate Amir Hossain Moradi, has contracted COVID-19.
In this regard, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), while calling this a flagrant crime against humanity by the mullahs’ regime said: “I urge the UN Secretary General and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to immediately intervene to save the lives of Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi, and secure their release.”

“It seems that the clerical regime is deliberately doing this, particularly under international pressure for the release of Amir Hossein Moradi and Ali Younesi and seeks to eliminate them by the coronavirus. The mullahs are taking advantage of the pandemic, replacing hanging executions of prisoners by infection with the deadly virus. Otherwise, infections could be prevented through isolation, quarantine, and other preventive measures and treatment,” Mrs. Rajavi added.
“Many members of parliament, personalities, as well as international associations and bodies have called on the clerical regime to release Amir Hossein Moradi and Ali Younesi, two genius students of Tehran’s Sharif Industrial University. They include Nobel laureates, a group of members of the European Parliament, Amnesty International, parliamentary committees in the UK, Italy, Australia, Canada and Belgium, the Human Rights Federation of Italy, the Hands off Cain NGO from Italy, the Committee of Muslims in France, Irish MPs, the International Committee in Search of Justice representing 4,000 MPs in Europe and the U.S., the committee of MPs from Romania, MPs and dignitaries from Arab countries, and the Committee of French Mayors,” she said.

The Iranian regime’s Judiciary announced on Tuesday, May 5, after almost a month of secrecy, that it had arrested Amir Hossain Moradi and Ali Younesi. The Judiciary spokesperson, Gholam-Hossain Esmaili, claimed that these students had engaged in “diversionary actions” and were “attempting to carry out sabotage operations.” “Explosive devices used in sabotage operations were discovered when their homes were searched,” he said.
Amir Hossein Moradi disappeared on April 10, and Ali Younesi was brought home in the evening of the same day, with injuries and torture marks. Ali won the gold medal of the 12th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, held in China in 2018. Earlier, he had won the silver and gold medals of the National Astronomy Olympiad in 2016 and 2017. Amir Hossein also won the Olympiad silver medal in 2017.
The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK) also announced the names of 18 other people who have been recently and secretly arrested by the regime. The regime was forced to announce the arrest of all these prisoners, particularly Ali and Amir Hossain, following international pressure and student protests at Sharif University, where Ali and Amir Hossain were studying.
At that time Mrs. Maryam Rajavi emphasized that the detainees are subject to torture and face execution, as well as in danger of being exposed to the Coronavirus. She again urged the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Human Rights Council, as well as the international human rights organizations to take urgent action to secure the release of the detainees and to send international missions to visit the regime’s prisons and meet with these prisoners.
