U.S. issues fresh warning about travel to Iran

The U.S. Department of State issued a fresh warning for Americans about travelling to Iran three weeks after the Iranian regime and the 5+1 countries reached an agreement with the regime to curb its nuclear activities.

The State Department said: “This deal over Iran’s nuclear program does not alter the United States’ assessment of the risks of travel to Iran for U.S. citizens.”

Americans traveling to Iran “may be subject to harassment or arrest while traveling or residing in Iran,” it added.

“Our ability to assist U.S. citizens in Iran in the event of an emergency is extremely limited.”

The warning updates a previous message from January, and largely reiterates longstanding concerns about Americans’ safety in Iran.

“The U.S. government does not have diplomatic or consular relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and therefore cannot provide protection or routine consular services to U.S. citizens in Iran,” the State Department said.
