NCRI – An ailing political prisoner in Iran’s notorious Rajai-Shahr Prison (Gohardasht Prison) is being refused treatment by the authorities in Iran.

Mr. Afshin Baymani, in his mid-forties, is suffering from a serious heart condition, but the regime is refusing to allow him to receive treatment in a hospital outside of the prison.

Medical staff in Rajai-Shahr Prison in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran, say Mr. Baymani is in need of an open heart surgery.

Mr. Baymani, a father of two, has been imprisoned for close to 15 years in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison and Rajai-Shahr Prison for helping his brother evade arrest.

Mr. Afshin Baymani was on September 6, 2000, originally sentenced to execution for helping his brother Mr. Mehdi Baymadi escape, but his sentence was reduced to life imprisonment six years later.

Mr. Afshin Baymani has twice suffered heart attacks and is in poor health. Last October, he was among a group of political prisoners who went on hunger strike in solidarity with Iranian women in Isfahan, central Iran, who at the time were subjected to a spate of acid attacks by organized fundamentalist gangs affiliated with the regime.
