US President Barack Obama told congress on Wednesday that told Congress that he was continuing the state of emergency “Because our relations with Iran have not yet returned to normal

“I have determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency,” said a statement issued by the president’s office in Washington.

Every November, US presidents have renewed a “state of emergency” concerning Iran that was announced by Jimmy Carter after the 1979 hostage taking.

Maintaining the “state of emergency” allows the US president to impose sanctions and regulate trade with Iran.
