Sudan expels Iranian regime diplomat, shut downs cultural centers

iran-sudanSudan ordered the closure of the Iranian regime’s Cultural Centers across the country, after the Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian regime’s charge d’affaires on Monday to inform him of the decision.
The Iranian regime’s cultural attaché and the staff at the center were also asked to leave the country within 72 hours.

Some press reports have suggested that the Sudanese government’s decision was motivated by warnings made by religious circles as well as the media about the spread of the clerical regime’s ideology among Sudanese youngsters after the intensification of activities by the office of the Iranian cultural attaché in Khartoum.

Sudanese tribune reported that the Egyptian media figure Ahmad al-Maslamani said last month “the number of Shiite followers in the Sunni dominated country reached 12,000 people mostly from university students who attend weekly workshops held by the cultural attaché of Iran.”

Another argument is that the move was made as a gesture to Arab Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in order to mend strained ties with them due to Khartoum’s warm relations with Tehran.
