Outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki must be held accountable for the arrests of hundreds of thousands of political detainees, the displacement of 1.6 million more Iraqis and Christians and the rise of the terror group ISIS, the head of the Iraqi National Movement has said in an interview.
Dr Ayad Allawi also warned that without an inclusive government, power would again fall into one person’s hands and this Iraq could face an even greater catastrophe than the current one.
He told Al-Arabiya TV: “It is more of a priority to hold accountable the person who is responsible for the displacement of over 1.6 million Iraqis, responsible for relocation of the Christians, and who is responsible for the rise of ISIS in Iraq, the person who is responsible for the arrests of hundreds of thousands of political detainees, a large portion of whom, around 4 to 5 thousand, are Iraq women.
“And all of these are aside from the murder of innocent people and aside from the policies adopted behind the curtains to prosecute political activists in the political process.
All of these issues must be reviewed and those responsible for such actions against the Iraqi people must be held accountable.”
Dr Allawi represented the winning party in 2010 election in Iraq, but with the interference of the Iranian regime al-Maliki was appointed to form the government.
Allawi also described his expectations of the newly assigned Prime Minister in Iraq, adding: “Our demand is that this Iraqi allows the participation of all Iraqis in the political process and only terrorists and thugs be left out.
“Secondly, national reconciliation must take place without question. Thirdly, government organs must be established away from political sectarianism. Institutions must be established upon skill and profession to serve the people on behalf of the government.”
