Several Kurdish associations in the defense of Human Rights called on the United Nations Secretary General to protect Iranian dissidents in Camp Liberty, Iraq and to work for the release of seven Camp Ashraf hostages.
The Association of Civil Society Organizations in Iraqi Kurdistan wrote on January 15: “Due to Iranian meddling in Iraq, many Iranian dissidents refugees in Iraq have been the target of deadly attacks by Nouri Maliki government which has close ties with Tehran. Dozens have been killed and hundreds were injured, especially during the brutal massacre of September 1, 2013, during which 52 people were killed and seven others abducted.”
“The Iraqi Kurdish association calls for action to ensure the protection of Iranian refugees in Iraq and to secure the release of seven Camp Ashraf hostages,” the letter added.
“The Institute of Iraqi Kurdistan for Human Rights” and “Association to Protect Rights of Refugees in Iraq,” sent similar letters to Secretary General Ban Ki -Moon.
The Institute of Iraqi Kurdistan for Human Rights , said: “Camp Liberty residents are protected persons under the 4th Geneva Convention, they have been living in Iraq for 30 years, and they have been recognized as asylum seekers by the UNHCR. “
The Association for Human Rights of Refugees in Iraq, called on the United Nations to recognize Camp Liberty as a refugees camp. The camp houses nearly 3,000 members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
