NCRI – Over 3,000 Iraqi sheikhs, political and social dignitaries from different provinces and ethnic backgrounds expressed their solidarity and support to the People’s Mojahedin of Iran in a rally in mid-May at Ashraf City, Iraq, where thousands of PMOI members are based.
Participants condemned Iranian regime’s efforts in extending its repression to Iraq and said they won’t allow Iran’s criminal rulers to succeed with their plans in Iraq.
In a statement adopted at the end of the rally, prominent sheikhs and personalities, especially leaders of Iraqi parties and associations reiterated their allegiance to the PMOI and called for full security guarantees and the right of free speech for Ashraf residents.
The rally’s statement endorsed the declaration by 2.8 million Iraqis which found the PMOI as its "natural ally and an important anti-thesis and political, cultural barrier to the Iranian regime’s fundamentalist influence in Iraq," and it described the movement as "the most effective obstacle to the regime’s expansionist dreams."
