Iranian dissidents call for independent investigation after attack on camp in Iraq

Paris (Source: AFP, Translated from French)- Iranian dissidents gathered Saturday in front of the French foreign ministry in Paris to ask France to intervene in the United Nations Security Council for an independent investigation into rockets that targeted Camp Liberty , near Baghdad.

About 200 people, including families of the inhabitants of this camp and supporters, came to support the call made by the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), said one of their spokesmen.

“We ask that France work with the UN to protect residents of Camp Liberty, and France to intervene in the UN Security Council for an independent inquiry into the massacres at Camp Liberty and camp Ashraf in September,” he added.

Three people were killed and 71 injured Thursday evening in Iraq when thirty rockets hit Camp Liberty near Baghdad airport, according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI ), that PMOI is its main component.

This is the fourth rocket attack this year against the camp, a former U.S. military base , where nearly 3,000 members of the Iranian PMOI reside.

Existing since 1965, with the aim of overthrowing the regime of the Shah and the Islamic regime, Mojahedin were expelled from Iran in the 1980s. Most settled in Camp Ashraf, north of Baghdad during the Iran -Iraq war (1980-1988 ).
