STATEMENT REGARDING IRANIAN ELECTION DAY

“What the world witnessed in Iran today was not a true election. It was a sham and a show, and no amount of propaganda or extended polling times from the regime will change that reality. The election was indeed boycotted by the majority of the Iranian people.  A voting exercise that offers only candidates loyal to the supreme leader is no election at all.

Supreme leader Khamenei has called in an estimated 1 million security personnel as well as paramilitary Basij forces and agents for the ministry of intelligence in fear of another uprising and to prevent any protests or uprisings.

Building this massive show of security from one polling station to the next, while herding journalists on guided tours to give the semblance of high voter turnout, will not fool any sophisticated observer.

What the Iranian people need is true choice and real freedom, and those will never happen under this regime, no matter which hand-picked candidate emerges from the election or a run-off. The only way to freedom in Iran is through democracy and regime change. The voice of the Iranian people must be heard, and we call on the world community to join us in that effort.”
