Iran: Suicide second highest cause of death among university students

NCRI – Suicide is the second highest cause of death among Iranian students after accidents, a survey has revealed.

Most students take their own lives by hanging themselves, and the commonest time to commit suicide is Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons and during exams, with the highest death rate at Isfahan University, the study found.

Separate research showed that between 2003 and 2008, 337 students killed themselves across Iran.

One expert told a state-run newspaper: “The education system in Iran is one of the reasons for youth depression and ultimately suicide.

“There is no joy in Iran’s education system. It is only full of restrictions and rules and psychological pressure.”

According to other studies the number of women that commit suicide in Iran are 3 to 4 times higher than men.
