Iranian regime bid to ban Ahmadinejad’s election rally

NCRI – Iranian regime’s chief of police wants to stop Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from staging a pre-election rally in Tehran’s Freedom Stadium, he has told the state-run Fars news agency.

Ahmadinejad has hopes to hold a gathering in the stadium on April 18 – in defiance of the clerics close to the Supreme Leader, who have accused him of raiding the public coffers to support his own political agenda.

Now Brigadier General Esmail Ahmadimoghdam said on Monday: “Regarding the gathering, given the limited sanitation, services and welfare facilities in the Freedom Stadium, and due to the presence of people of different ages, this seems to pose a lot of problems for the authorities.

“There is also concern that holding such an event would present the election process as unhealthy, be unfair on rivals and have a negative political effect.

“Also, spending huge sums to hold such a meeting is in conflict with our goal of creating a strong economy. Therefore the State Security Forces do not agree it should take place.

Other regime’s officials have also opposed the event with senior cleric Makarem Shirazi accusing Ahmadinejad of trying to hide the fact it is an election rally.

Shirazi added on Sunday: “Why do you lie to the people? Come and admit this is an election meeting.”

Another senior cleric, Abdollah Javadi-Amoli, also warned the president last week not to use public money to support his own political goals.

State-run Raja news quoted Amoli – a close ally of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei – as saying: “Those who use the government facilities on their behalf during the election, will be charged and prosecuted.”
