Iran: 6.3 magnitude earthquake near nuclear power plant

NCRI – A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has struck in south-west Iran, not far from the country’s only nuclear power station, the US Geological Survey reports.

According to the latest reports at least 31 people have been killed and over 500 injured.

The quake’s epicentre is 89km (55 miles) from Bushehr, the USGS said.

The quake hit at 4:22 pm (1152 GMT) with a depth of 12 kilometres (7.5 miles), the Seismological Centre in Iran said.

People on social media reported feeling the quake across the Gulf in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Reuters, citing the Russian news agency RIA, quotes a statement by the Russian company that built Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant as saying it is operating normally.

“We could clearly feel the earthquake,” one Bushehr resident told Reuters by phone. “The windows and chandeliers all shook.”
