Leading German statesman demands safety and transfer for Liberty residents

NCRI – Iranian refugees languishing in Camp Liberty should be resettled including some in Germany, Former European Commissioner Gunter Verheugen has told Germany’s ZDF television.

He also demanded that all endangered Liberty residents be immediately moved to Camp Ashraf before being transferred to third countries.

And he called on his own country to condemn the ongoing human rights violations against the camp’s population.

He said of Camp Liberty: “Their living conditions are unbearable. As the recent rocket attack that resulted in the death of 8 and injury of more than 100 in Liberty show, there are no guarantees for the security of the refugees either.

“So far third countries have only accepted to take a small number of the refugees. We can in no way whatsoever call Camp Liberty a temporary residence.

“My expectation from the federal government is to condemn any violations against the former residents of Camp Ashraf. I expect Germany to at least accept the persons related to Germany.”

Mr Verheugen accused Iraq of plotting to dismantle Ashraf so its residents would be left in that country without any security.

He added: “Iraq is under the influence of the Iranian regime and it is fully aware that PMOI/MEK is the only democratic alternative for the present regime in Iran and this is what it is afraid of.”

The US had also pledged to protect Liberty residents, but added: “Today the United States does not want to own up to the security guarantees it once gave to all residents of Ashraf.

“Two things are very important now. Full security guaranteed by the UN for the residents of Camp Liberty, and their urgent exit from Iraq and transfer to secure third countries.

“For humanitarian reasons, we can not stand by and simply watch when the the lives of people are at stake, whatever your view of the PMOI.”
