Iranian Resistance calls on EU to protect refugees of Camp Liberty

The leader of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), Maryam Rajavi, today urged the European Union to protect 3,000 Iranian refugees of Camp Liberty, Iraq.

Maryam Rajavi, who participated today in an act of protest of the Iranian opposition in the European Parliament, sent a letter to the EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton, asking that refugees are transferred to European countries or Camp Ashraf, their first home in the Iraqi province of Diyala.

The opposition leader warned about the dangers for the refugees in Camp Liberty are facing following the attack that killed eight people and caused hundreds of casualties on 9 February.

“Iraq rejects to ensure security measures for refugees. I Urge Ashton to immediately transfer them to EU countries or Ashraf,” Rajavi said.

The meeting was organized by the group of MEPs “Friends of Free Iran”, which has the support of about 200 legislators and Vice-President Alejo Vidal-Quadras of the Popular Party is among them.

Vidal-Quadras said that “there is no doubt that the Iranian regime was behind the attack on February 9.”

The Spanish Vice-President of the European Parliament called to remove United Nations special envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler, whom he accused of “not being impartial” in the case of Iranian refugees in the country.

“He is a barrier to solving the problem and he is an embarrassment to the UN. Hopefully one day he pays for his conduct and for the victims that he has failed to protect at Camp Liberty,” he added.

Both Rajavi and the Popular MEP criticized Kobler speech before the UN Security Council on March 21.

Kobler advocated “very limited transfers of residents so that the situation continue as if nothing had ever happened before the latest attack,” said Vidal-Quadras.
