Mrs. Maryam Rajavi welcomes the EU oil sanctions, calls for expanding sanctions urges other countries to join the sanctions

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, welcomed the imposition of oil sanctions on the Iranian regime by the European Union as a necessary step to prevent the religious fascism ruling Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. She urged their complete implementation and called on other countries to join the EU‘s sanction regime.

She emphasized that these sanctions should be used as a leverage to compel the mullahs to dismantle their nuclear program in its entirety. For their part, the Iranian people totally reject any compromise on implementing the UN Security Council resolutions and accepting uranium enrichment by this regime.

Mrs. Rajavi added that the Iranian Resistance has been demanding these sanctions for the past 25 years, in particular since 2002 when it revealed the nuclear sites in Natanz and Arak. The delay in imposing these sanctions has brought great harm to regional and global peace and tranquility, she said.

While reminding that a major portion of Iranian economy, particularly the import and export sectors, is controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), Mrs. Rajavi reiterated that imposing comprehensive sanctions are more imperative than ever, not only due to the mullahs’ nuclear program but also due to its flagrant violations of human rights and export of terrorism. In addition to oil, the sanctions should be expanding to the mullahs’ banking, trade and technology sectors.

The President-elect of the Iranian Resistance underscored that the religious dictatorship ruling Iran will never abandon it drive to acquire nuclear weapons because it is a critical part of its survival strategy. This explains the futility of negotiation with the mullahs’ regime despite P5+1 concessions and flexibility. As such, while imposing sanctions is indispensable to stopping the regime’s nuclear weapons program, the ultimate solution is regime change by the Iranian people and the organized resistance movement and the establishment of democracy in Iran.
