Members of Iraqi parliament welcome of the EU special envoy for Ashraf appointed by Catherine Ashton

The Iraqi newspaper, Al-Zaman, wrote on October 1, 2011: Iraqi parliamentarian urge the Iraqi government to coordinate with the UN to resolve the crisis in Ashraf and call for the withdrawal of Iraq’s armed forces and lifting siege of Ashraf.

Omar Khalaf, al-Iraqi’s representative, urged al-Maliki’s government to coordinate with the European Union’s special envoy for Ashraf. If the subject is done under the framework of dialogue with the government, positive results will be achieved.

Dr. Zafer al-Ani of Iraqi leaders, urged the Iraqi government to cooperate with the UN and European Union to achieve a peaceful and legal solution to the camp residents. The Iraqi government must end violation of rules and international obligations regarding human rights and the rights of asylum seekers and refugees.

Haidar Mulla, al-Iraqi speaker and Rapporteur of the Parliament’s Commission on Human Rights, described appointing special adviser of the European Union for Ashraf by Ms Catherine Ashton as a positive step toward resolving the crisis of the camp residents, despite the delay in this work.

It is noteworthy that Mr Jean De Ruyt, Belgian diplomat and former Belgium’s representative at the UN, was appointed on September 2011 as special envoy to Ashraf by Ms Catherine Ashton, the Council of Europe’s foreign policy chief.
