We support a call by the Iranian opposition to the UNSC to appoint a representative to make an independent inquiry into the recent massacre in Ashraf

Press release
20 April 2011

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, has called on the UN Security Council to appoint a representative to carry out an impartial, comprehensive, transparent and independent inquiry into the April 8th attack against Ashraf residents, adding that the Government of Iraq – itself a perpetrator of this crime – under no circumstances has the qualification to carry out this investigation. A fair and objective inquiry can only be possible if kept uninfluenced by Maliki’s government and the Iranian regime.

The international committee “In Search of Justice” announces its all-out support for this call, ready to place all its means and expertise at the disposal of the UN Security Council representative.

Inaction regarding the April 8th massacre is not an option for today’s civilized world. Two practical, urgent and minimal measures are a square investigation into this crime and preventing its repetition. These two measures are within the scope of UN’s duties and responsibilities.

Hence, we call on the UN Secretary General, member-states of the UN Security Council and all UN countries to support the appointment of a special representative to investigate over the crimes perpetrated in the April 8th attack, and to take practical measures in taking over the protection of Camp Ashraf by UN forces, and the evacuation of Iraqi forces from the camp.

As a power with strong and widely recognized democratic institutions in the world today, the EU holds an evident responsibility on its shoulders. Therefore, while appreciating the actions of Baroness Ashton, the EU High Representative and Vice President of the Commission, we urge her to announce her approval of the appointment of a UNSC representative and the assumption of protection by the UN, and initiate practical measures in this regard. We also urge EU member-states, especially the four countries in the UNSC, to take necessary steps towards the accomplishment of this urgent humanitarian action.
