The National Council of Resistance of Iran released video on Tuesday (April 19) showing what its says is an assault by Iraqi forces on an Iranian dissident camp in Iraq in which 34 people died. The video shows forces storming the camp, opening fire and wounded people being carried away. Bodies are laid out on stretchers at the end.

The United Nations has said 34 people died in the attack although the death toll is disputed by Iraqi authorities who say only three people were killed in the operation and others were dead before troops moved in.

Shahin Gobadi, a member of the NCRI’s foreign affairs committee, said journalists and lawyers have been forbidden access to the camp. “The raid against Camp Ashraf on April the 8th was decided at the highest levels of the Iraqi army, on the orders of Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister. It’s time for the UN to step in to ensure the protection of these people, who were all protected, people under the fourth Geneva convention,” he said. “We have asked for a special investigation by the UN Security Council, and a special rapporteur, to investigate the atrocities in Camp Ashraf,”

he added. Ashraf is the base of the People’s Mujahideen Organization of Iran, which the United States, Iraq and Iran consider a terrorist organisation, although the European Union removed it from its terrorism blacklist in 2009. The NCRI is its political wing.
