Iran: Six People Arrested for Training Zumba Dance

NCRI – The Iranian regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) commander in Shahrud announced the arrest of members of a Zumba and Shafel Dance Training Network.

Colonel Hamid Damaghani, IRGC commander in Shahrud, has announced that a western dance training network has been identified and arrested while filming and making video clips.

He added that the arrest of these people was placed on the agenda of the IRGC’s Intelligence after the release of the movie and dance clips on the Telegram and Instagram networks.

The IRGC commander has accused the group of debauchery and that by training a variety of western dances and producing clips, they were trying to change the lifestyles and promoting unveiling and rejecting the obscenity of this issue.

“After the observation by the IRGC Intelligence forces of Shahrud, the members of this network were identified and a court order was issued by Shahrud district prosecutor and several members of the network were arrested in a strike action, including four boys and two girls who were in a mix-gender meeting and while filming and making clips,” Damghani said.

Shahrud’s IRGC commander added that the detainees had confessed to the discovery of veils in the parks and boulevards of the city and the placement of photos and videos of this action in groups and channels of Telegram and Instagram.

Damaghani has called for more control over classes and sports halls to crack down on youth. He claimed that promoting women dancing in the clubs would upset the majority of women and their absence in sports clubs.

Two months earlier, the Iranian Public Sports Federation had announced a ban on rhythmic exercises, including Zumba, in sports clubs.

In an explanation of this announcement, Ali Majdara, the head of the sports federation, said in June 2017, “Zumba is the same as dance and dance is forbidden.” He reminded that there is no official or licenced dance class in Iran, and any activity in this context lacks legal right.
