The Iraqi committee tasked with suppression of Camp Ashraf residents is refusing to hand over the body of Taghi Abbassian, who died in September due to the medical siege of Camp Liberty
The committee continues to use hostage-taking of the deceased as a mean to psychologically torture the members of families of the victims and residents of Camp Liberty

In an inhuman and anti-Islamic measure, the Iraqi committee tasked with suppression of Iranian residents of Camp Ashraf who are currently in Camp Liberty, is refusing to hand over for burial the body of a resident who died last month due to medical siege.

Mr. Taghi Abbassian, a member of Iranian opposition, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), died last month due to the medical siege imposed on Camp Liberty.

Despite the fact that that all legal formalities of burial have been long completed the body of Mr Abbassain has not been yet delivered to residents for burial.
Over the past few weeks, the residents’ representatives and their legal advisors have made over 20 requests at Camp Liberty Police station to have his body delivered for burial.
Also, they have demanded the resolution of this issue in numerous meetings or telephone contacts with UNAMI and its monitors.

The committee in charge of suppression of Camp Ashraf resident, supervised by Faleh Fayyad, Nouri al-Maliki’s national security adviser, psychologically tortures members of families of the victims and Camp Liberty residents by refusing to hand over the bodies of the deceased.

The body of another resident Mr. Bardia Amir-mostofian, 44, who died on 20 March 2012 of cardiac arrest that was caused by fatigue during the forcible transfer of residents from Camp Ashraf, was handed over to the residents 11 month later.

The bodies of four resident killed during the fourth rocket attack on Camp Liberty were handed over 8 months after the attack.

The bodies of Hamid Shakeri and Mohammad Babaei, who died due of medical siege were handed over for burial after four and six months respectively and allowed to be buried were buried after countless complaints made by their family members and friends.

Furthermore, upon an order by Nouri al-Maliki, the committee refused to hand over the bodies of 52 members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) massacred of September 1, 2013 in Camp Ashraf, to their families in Liberty.
In order to eradicate the signs of this great crime against humanity, they were secretly buried in an unknown location. Their families have not yet been able to visit the graves of their loved ones.

The Iranian Resistance calls on the United Nations Secretary-General, High Commissioner for Refugees, High Commissioner for Human Rights and the American officials to take immediate action to end these inhumane practices, which violate many international treaties that makes respecting the bodies of the deceased binding.
