Cyprus police say they have arrested a second suspect in connection with a large seizure of ammonium nitrate, which can be turned into an explosive, The Associated Press reported.

Police said Saturday that the 62-year-old Lebanese-Cypriot suspect, who has been living on the island for years, brought the five tons of the chemical compound to Cyprus from Lebanon as chemical ice contained in first-aid packs.

On Friday, a judge renewed for another eight days the detention of a 26-year-old Lebanese-Canadian man who was arrested after police raided a Larnaca-area home he was staying in and where the chemical was stashed.

Citing Cypriot intelligence sources, Daily Phileleftheros reported on Wednesday that the man, who holds a Canadian passport, is a member of Hezbollah’s military wing with close ties with the group’s leader Hassan Nasrullah. According to the report, he received training in Iran by the Iranian regime’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).

The information received by the Secret Service KYP led police to the house in which the 26-year-old was staying following his arrival to Cyprus last week.

On Wednesday afternoon, police entered the house and found two tonnes of ammonium nitrate – a fertiliser that can become a powerful explosive when mixed with other substances –stored in boxes in the basement.

The tonnes of ammonium nitrate found last week were transported to an undisclosed location for temporary storage and disposal, police spokesman Andreas Angelides said on Friday as the suspect in the case, was given  a second eight-day detention.
