General George CaseyNCRI - US top commander in Baghdad accused Iran of meddling in Iraq's elections.

Speaking to reporters via video-link from Baghdad on Friday, General George Casey, who commands US forces in Iraq, said: "I don't have hard, smoking gun-type evidence, but the intelligence we have tells us they invested heavily in political parties supportive of Iran in the south."

"And I believe they will continue to attempt to influence the formation of this government over the coming weeks, to get a government that they believe is supportive of their interests," he said, adding: "That is worrisome and it is a challenge for us."

Addressing Tehran's Friday prayers sermon today, Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, former President and strongman of the mullahs' regime, described elections in Iraq on Thursday a "victory" for the regime in Iran.

"We share this victory with the Iraqi nation since we paid a heavy price to lay the groundwork for the elections. It is a victory because the results were the opposite of what the Americans were seeking," said Rafsanjani.
