Five hours after the election, polling stations in Tehran, other cities remain deserted
Iran – election – statement no. 3
Eyewitness reports indicate that five hours after the start of the
election, polling stations in Tehran and other cities were deserted
completely. The Iranian people have decisively boycotted this
illegitimate election.
In Tehran, polling stations in Ghaem Magham Farahani Street, Bob -ol
Havaej mosque in Pounak district, Abolfazl mosque in Zafar Street,
Hafthoz mosque in Narmak, Hassani mosque in Nirooyeh Havai Street,
Avicenna high school, Sattar Khan, Maktab-e Sadeq, Daryan-no streets,
Hamzeh mosque in Shadman and Imam Zaman mosque in Behboodi streets,
Razaveih and Abolfazl mosques in Ghasr-ol Dasht Street, Chitgar in
Shariati and Imamzadeh Saleh streets, Vali-e Asr mosque, Hazrat Rasoul
mosque, Enghelab Square, Nazi-Abad and Malek Ashtar districts, Feiz
Kashani high school, Moslem bin Aghil high school, Towhid mosque,
Shemiranat, Armenian, and Hashemi districts, and Amir-al Mo’menin
mosque, were reported to be deserted by voters.
In Tehran, officials in polling stations complained of boredom and
fatigue because no one had shown up to vote. In Tehran’s Pirouzi and
Coca Cola streets locals have gone to parks for recreation.
In Tehran’s Nazi-Abad districts, authorities warned the elderly that if they did not vote, their pensions would be cut off.
In polling stations in many districts in other cities including Tabriz,
Ramsar, Azna, Shahr-e Kord, Ahwaz, Kamrayan, Bonab, Torbat Heidarieh,
Zabol and Karaj, a very small number of people cast their ballots.
In the northern province of Mazandaran, Rafsanjani’s election headquarters has offered each voter 250,000 rials and lunch.
In the northeastern city of Mashad, authorities have ordered students
who are members of the paramilitary Bassij to vote for the former State
Security Forces commander Brig. Gen. Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.
Despite all the propaganda over a huge turnout, the state television,
citing “technical difficulties,” has only broadcast films from
Sadeqieh, Hosseinieh Ershad, Naziabad and Lorzadeh mosque.
